Leaf Privacy Policy
Leaf is a comic and manga reader developed by Bryan Clark under the DigitalBC name. This policy describes the Google Play version of Leaf for Android (net.digitalbc.leafreader).
Your comics, library, reading progress, and preferences are processed on your device. Leaf does not require an account or automatically send your reader data to DigitalBC. It contains no advertising, analytics SDK, tracking SDK, or integrated automatic crash-reporting service.
Local files and library data
When you import a comic, Leaf reads the selected file and creates a copy in Android's app-private storage. It also generates cover thumbnails and stores titles, series and issue information, file locations, reading lists, reading direction and position, and dates added or last opened.
Leaf uses this information to display your library, open comics, remember your place, and apply your preferences. Imported comics remain readable offline.
If you choose a file or export destination supplied by a cloud-storage app in Android's file picker, that provider may download or upload the selected file under its own privacy policy.
Optional SMB connections
Leaf can connect to an SMB/Samba server you choose. It saves the server address, share, username, and password locally when you select Save & Test Connection, including when a connection test fails.
When you test, browse, or import, Leaf connects directly to your configured server. The server receives the connection, authentication information required by SMB, and requests for folders and files. Its operator may keep access logs. These requests do not pass through a DigitalBC service. Leaf does not automatically discover servers or periodically sync your library.
The Android app stores SMB details in app-private preferences without separate encryption for saved passwords. Their protection depends on Android's application sandbox and your device security. Leaf does not require encryption for every SMB connection; connection protection depends on the server and protocol configuration. Use servers and networks you trust.
Export and backup
Export Backup creates an unencrypted JSON file containing library metadata, reading progress, reading lists, relevant timestamps, and selected preferences. It excludes comic files, cover images, SMB connection details and passwords, and internal device file paths.
You choose the destination through Android's file picker. The export can reveal your reading choices, so store it securely and review it before sharing. Restore reads the backup you select and applies it locally.
The Google Play build is configured to disable automatic Android cloud backup. Its rules permit database-only device transfer through the operating system. That database contains library, progress, and reading-list information, including local file locations, but not SMB passwords. Actual transfer availability depends on your device and operating system. This setting does not delete backups made by older app versions. Leaf has no DigitalBC cloud-sync service.
Diagnostics and Google Play
Leaf may write errors and warnings to Android's local diagnostic logs. Error details can include file paths or messages from a file provider. Leaf has no service that automatically uploads these logs to DigitalBC.
Google Play and Android may separately collect installation, usage, and diagnostic information under your settings and Google's policies. Google can make crash and performance reports available to developers through Play Console when users opt in to share usage and diagnostics. See Google's Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.
External links and optional support
Leaf's menu opens external pages, including GitHub and the optional Support Leaf page on Ko-fi, in your browser or another app. Those services may receive your IP address, browser information, and cookies under their own policies. Leaf does not attach your comics, reading history, or SMB credentials to these links.
If you support Leaf through Ko-fi, Ko-fi and its payment providers process the payment. You do not enter payment-card details in Leaf. Ko-fi can share your supporter name, email address, message, and transaction information with the creator, and payment providers may share additional transaction details. See Ko-fi's Privacy Policy: https://more.ko-fi.com/privacy.
Retention and deletion
Leaf keeps local library data and preferences until you remove them or clear its storage. Deleting a comic in Leaf removes its app-managed copy and library record, not the original file or a copy on your SMB server.
To remove all local Leaf data, including saved SMB credentials, clear Leaf's app storage in Android Settings or uninstall Leaf. Exported backups, original files, older system backups, server logs, and external-service records must be managed separately. Leaf does not create an account or a DigitalBC-hosted copy of your library.
